Seeding and Aeration

Seeding and aeration time is here. With the hot and dry summer we've had, now is the time to aerate and overseed. By now you have received your seeding letter, so with limited weeks available call now to reserve your spot on the schedule. If you have not been watering, now is the time to start. The ground needs to be well watered to get the most from the aeration and overseeding. Virginia Green Lawn Care will start aerating lawns the first week in September. Seed germination may take up to thirty days. It is very important that you follow the instructions provided to get the best germination possible. We will notify you 10 days before your scheduled date with a post card, and call you two days before the date to make sure your lawn is ready. If there is a conflict with your date, please call as early as possible so we can get you rescheduled.

Trees and Shrubs

It is very important to ensure that your trees and shrubs are properly watered. Mature trees and shrubs will require less frequent watering than newly installed plant material. Typically, mature landscapes will not require watering more than once a week. Prevent wasting water by watering at the drip line of each individual plant. A drip system or soaker hose placed in this area is the best way to direct the water where it will be utilized by the plant. Do not water until the soil at the surface is dry 3-5” down. Encourage a deep, drought resistant root zone, by watering deeply and infrequently. Newly installed plants and trees should be watered with a product called a tree gator, which is a perforated bag that slowly waters the new plant. Below are some helpful hints.

Signs of Under Watering
• Soil is dry
• Older leaves turn yellow or brown and may drop off
• Leaves are wilted and/or curled

Signs of Over Watering
• Soil is constantly damp
• Young leaves become light green or yellow
• Young shoots are wilted
• Leaves are green yet brittle
• Algae and mushrooms are growing

Tips for efficient watering
• Control weeds. Use mulch, not black plastic, to allow water and air to circulate in the root zone
• Avoid watering the leaves of the plant material. There is more evaporation and this can also lead to fungal problems
• For trees and shrubs in the lawn water these separately from the grass with a soaker hose at the drip line
• Use a battery operated timer and soaker hoses if you do not have irrigation
• Prevent runoff by watering at a slower rate
• Water in the mornings before 9am to avoid evaporation and disease issues
• Use rainwater whenever possible. No chlorine and its free.

Lawn Renovations

There is still plenty of time to renovate your lawn. If you have Bermuda (wire) grass or unsightly field grasses in your lawn, now is the time to renovate.
