Dry lawns
With recent temperatures topping 100 degrees, non-irrigated
turf grasses are showing signs of heat and drought stress.
The initial visual symptom looks like dark spots in the lawn.
This is due to leaf curling. The symptoms are most pronounced
during the heat of the day. Often the plant will re-hydrate
overnight. At some point, if the turf grass plant is not able
to re-hydrate, the leaves will turn brown and result in thinning
of the turf grass. But, just because the turf turns brown
does not mean it is dead. This is the plant’s protection mechanism.
The picture above show an irrigated lawn in which the irrigation
head is not working properly. The green area is getting water
and the rest is not. Remember, you need ¾ of an inch of water
per watering, or 1 ½ to 2 inches per week.
Fungicide Application #2
We
are now spraying the second fungicide application. This application
also includes a grub control. Remember Brown Patch, when active,
are small circles usually no bigger than a basketball. If
you have larger brown areas, there is a good chance they are
dry patches. Good watering habits will take care of those
spots. Here is a picture of active Brown patch in a lawn.
