Seeding and Aeration
Seeding season is underway! If the summer´s heat has taken its toll on your lawn, then you need to aerate and seed with Virginia Green Lawn Care. Our Aeration and Overseeding program consists of double core aeration of the lawn and applying the correct amount of seed for your lawn. This program will rejuvenate and thicken your lawn. Good dates are still available, so call today to schedule your aeration and seeding today.
Trees and Shrubs
Summer annual flowers generally need to be replaced this time of year with plants that can survive the freezing temperatures of winter. Till the planting bed to a depth of at least 6", add soil amendment such as leaf mold compost, plant 6" potted plants on 12" centers, fertilize with a slow release fertilizer, and apply mulch to help retain moisture.
Check the quantity of mulch in your ornamental plant beds. You should maintain a consistent depth of about 2-3" of mulch to insure proper water retention. Mulch needs to be replaced as it decays or is removed when raking leaves. This is also a great time to have an Ornamental Bed Weed Control Treatment applied to your beds. This program will help with winter annual weeds in your mulch beds.
Fall is a great time to plant new trees and shrubs. October and November are particularly good as temperatures drop and rainfall increases. This will put less stress on the plants as they try to acclimate to their new environment. Dig the hole for the new plant approximately 2 times wider than the root ball of the plant. Place the plant so the top of the plants root ball is about 2" higher than the grade of the bed. Do not plant Crape Myrtles in the fall.
The last couple of months have been very dry and we are behind our average rainfall for the year. Mature trees and shrubs will require less frequent watering than newly installed plant material. Typically, mature landscapes will not require watering more than once a week, but this can vary by plant type and soil type. Encourage a deep, drought resistant root zone, by watering deeply and infrequently.
Lawn Renovations
There is still plenty of time to renovate your lawn. If you have Bermuda (wire) grass or unsightly field grasses in your lawn, now is the time to renovate. This program will eliminate these unwanted grasses and get your lawn on the way to being Virginia Green. Call the office today for more details.
Water Restrictions
With the recent dry weather most of our service areas are under water restrictions. The restrictions are changing daily, so check your county's web site for the latest information.
