Have you seen this in your yard?
Virginia Green Lawn Care receives calls each year from customers stating that they have a weed in their yard that they want us to treat. This is Poa Annua which is actually a grass in the bluegrass family. Poa Annua grows in compacted soils along the edges of driveways and sidewalks, and in wet areas of lawns where the turf is thin. Poa is an annual that germinates in our area in August, September and October. It grows through the winter and then flowers in the spring. We will see it dying off in the next month and it will not return. However, the seeds that Poa produces are viable and the potential for it to reappear in your lawn the next year is great.
Virginia Green Lawn Care offers a Poa Annua treatment as an additional service in November. With this treatment we blanket spray the yard to keep the viable seeds from germinating and overtaking the lawn the next year. If you have Poa Annua in your yard now, and would like for us to treat it this fall, please call our office at (804) 285-6200.
Proper mowing height makes all the difference!
NCSU did extensive testing on the relationship between mowing height and the incidence of crabgrass in tall fescue lawns. The chart below shows that as the mowing height increases, the incidence of crabgrass decreases drastically. The chart lists mowing height in centimeters and the columns moving from left to right equate to 1 inch, 2 inches, 3 inches, and 4 inches. You will see that raising your mowing height from 1 inch to 4 inches, you will decrease your incidence of crabgrass from 90% down to just 3%. This is one small change that you can make that will vastly improve the condition of your lawn. If you have any other mowing questions please call our office at (804) 285-6200.
