VA Green Community Service:
Have you ever wondered what your lawn care company is doing during the off season? Well here at Virginia Green Lawn Care, in addition to servicing all of the machinery and ordering supplies for the upcoming season, we are doing our part to help out the community.
This January, all of our technicians and service managers spent a day helping out at the Central Virginia Food Bank. After stocking over 10,000 food items on the shelves, we felt good about giving back to the community.
If you have any ideas for future community outreach projects please feel free to email us at info@virginiagreenlawncare.com.

We have a New Tree and Shrub Specialist:
Virginia Green Lawn Care is pleased to announce a full time horticultural specialist on staff to work with customers on our Tree and Shrub program. Vanessa Straughn graduated from J Sargeant Reynolds with an Associates degree in Applied Science with a major in horticulture and floral design. Her career began in the floral industry, working with a local florist. This led her outside to a local nursery, and to a company where she handled landscape design and installation. Vanessa is excited to work with the Virginia Green team stating "I love working outside and working in the green industry."
January Tree and Shrub News:
If you haven't already mulched your beds, now is a good time to place mulch around your landscape plants. Here's a tip: wait until all the leaves from surrounding trees and shrubs have fallen before you spread your mulch. The mulched area will look better longer because the mulch is leaf-free. If you have disease-infected plants, now is a good time to prune out these areas. This is also a good time to prune dead branches from trees.
Do not prune roses now, this could cause winter injury. The beds should be raked and cleaned to prevent black spot and other diseases. If your climbing roses are in an exposed location, tie them up firmly with broad strips of rags so the wind will not whip them against the trellis and bruise the bark. You may also notice that your pines, arborvitae, and junipers are shedding some of their interior needles; this is natural for this time of year. If you're not currently on our Tree and Shrub program, now is a great time to call and get more information on how to make your landscape look its best.
With cold weather here:
With cold weather here, now is a good time to make sure your lawn is clean. You don't want any leaves or debris on the lawn that could suffocate the turf. If you use any snow melt products, be sure to keep them off your lawn as they could cause harm to your turf. Remember to try to stay off frozen turf as you could damage the grass blades just by walking on the grass. You may also notice some yellowing in your fescue lawn; this is because the roots are too cold to take in the nutrients from the soil. Once the soil temperature warms up, the rich green color will return.
If the soil sample Virginia Green Lawn Care took for you in 2008 suggested an additional lime application, now would be a good time for us to do that application. Lime takes a while to break down and change the Ph level in the soil. By having Virginia Green Lawn Care do this treatment now, it will benefit your lawn in the spring when the fescue starts actively growing again. Call today to schedule this treatment.
