FALL TREE AND SHRUB TIPS!
October is a good month to replace your summer annuals. Pansies are a colorful and popular choice. Till the planting bed after removing the old plants and amend the soil with compost. Plant 6" potted plants on 12" centers, then fertilize with a balanced slow release fertilizer. Apply mulch for moisture retention and weed prevention.
Now is also a good time to plant trees and shrubs. Dig the hole
for the new plant at least two times wider than the root ball
or pot. Place the plant in the hole so the root flare of the
plant is at least 2" above the existing grade of the planting
bed. Use the existing soil to loosely fill the hole (no packing),
then add water until the soil sinks. Add more soil, without
packing, until it tapers from the root flare to the grade of
the bed. Apply mulch tapering from the root flare (no mulch
touching the plant) to 2" at the bed grade.
Newly installed plants need plenty of water. Water ½" 3 times per week until late November. Check moisture by sticking your finger into the soil around the plant. If the soil is dry 2" down then the new plant needs water. New trees are best watered with a tree gator, which can be purchased at most nurseries.
KEEP WATERING THOSE NEWLY SEEDED LAWNS!
Virginia Green Lawn Care is entering our last few weeks of Aerating and Overseeding for the 2009 season. We have gotten some nice rain over the last couple of days, but in the absence of rain you need to continue to water your new seedlings so that they don't dry out. The three weeks following aeration and seeding are the most critical in determining the success of your seeding job. Remember also that we do expect to see germination of winter weeds along with the new seed. This is expected and we will be out to treat those weeds with the last treatment of the year.
