HAS ANYONE NOTICED HOW HOT IT HAS BEEN? WE SURE HAVE!
In an article in last Friday’s Richmond Times Dispatch paper they stated that this is the warmest spring on record for our area which was certainly not a shock to any of us here at Virginia Green Lawn Care. Our area currently has a 3 inch deficit in rainfall amounts, and that seems to be increasing. Based on these numbers we would like to take this opportunity to pass along suggested watering techniques that we feel are most beneficial to your lawn.
First, we suggest two to three longer, deeper watering sessions each week, rather than four or more shorter watering sessions. These deeper waterings will help establish a deeper root system for the lawn, therefore making it more drought resistant. In each of these sessions we suggest getting .75” to an inch of water on your lawn each time.
Secondly, the time of day in which you water is also very important. Virginia Green Lawn Care suggests early morning watering sessions. Watering at this time gives the leaf blade sufficient time to dry out during the day. When water remains on the leaf blade overnight, your lawn is more susceptible to lawn diseases.
Our service managers and territory managers have been seeing many lawns that are suffering from heat and drought stress. If you are not able, or choose not to water your lawn, it will go into dormancy during the summer months, and then with aeration and overseeding in the fall, it will recover. If you have any questions about this information, or have any lawn and landscaping questions, please contact our office at (804)285-6200 or (757)258-1788.
